Date of discovery: XV/VI/MCMLXIII
Place: 69 km north/west of Maralinga
Species: Larriq
Variety: Lepton
Out in the same desolate stretch near Maralinga, another Larriq showed up. The crew dubbed this one “Lepton”. Perched atop its stubby, three-legged body, the head was an odd mix of metals, with two fierce, glowing orange eyes locked onto the horizon, that never seemed to blink, watching with eerie intensity.
The scientists found Lepton lurking in a shallow ditch, surrounded by a scattered mess of things that made no sense – like someone had tossed a handful of random junk out of a car window ages ago. There was a nice glass chrystal, an old-fashioned rectal thermometer and a skein of embroidery thread. As with the other Larriqs, Lepton didn’t seem to care about any of these items; they were just relics of a forgotten time, adding to the confusion of its existence.
When they started observing Lepton it didn’t take long to notice its peculiar ability. Whenever it stood still for long enough, one of its eyes would shoot a thin, bright orange beam of light at random objects. The beam didn’t burn, zap, or even leave a mark. No, whatever it hit would just scoot slightly to the left.
A rock, a twig, even a loose button on one of the scientists’ jackets – anything in the beam’s path would slide a few inches left. That was it. No harm, no foul. Just an inexplicable little shove to the side.
